The Power List

If you're like me and have a never-ending 'To Do' list then keep reading because I'm about to help you finally toss it and actually GET THINGS DONE!

This is done by creating a Power List. You may have already heard of this before and that's because I didn't make it up. Full credit goes to Andy Frisella whose podcast I listen to. Butttt if you haven't heard of this, I am so excited you are here reading about it now so that I can share this new stress relieving way to go about your day!

So, how does it work?

Take a sheet of paper, title it 'Power List' and number 1-5. Now write down 5 critical tasks that you are going to complete for the day. Emphasis on the word critical. These tasks should be helping you move the needle forward little by little each day. Do not write more than 5 critical tasks down. You cannot get 10-15 critical tasks done in one day. This is not a goals list so don't write down "Lose 5 pounds" (you obviously can't do that in one day) but instead write the action step you need to take to get there. So probably something like "Workout". This is a list of actionable steps you are taking to get to your goals. Do not write down anything that is already a habit for you or apart of your current routine. These are tasks that you either want to become a habit or big moves you need to take for the goals you have set. I am going to use the "Workout" task as an example again. Someone who could write this is a person who does not already currently workout on a regular basis and wants to make it a new habit. Now, that same person could write "Workout" everyday on their list for 21 days and after 21 days it falls off and that slot opens up for a new task. This is because after 21 days of being consistent with working out, it should start to feel like apart of their new routine and become a habit. 21 days is what Andy recommends to form a habit but I personally think it may take a little longer than that. So if you feel like you need to leave your task on a week or two longer than that, do it! Once you complete a task, draw a line through it for that serotonin boost :) We all know how good it feels to mark something off your to-do list. After you have completed and marked through all 5 tasks, draw a big "W" anywhere on the page and circle it because you have just won the day! When you wake up the next morning get a fresh sheet of paper and start again.

Making a Power List everyday is going to put you way ahead of the game than a to-do list that's a mile long. This is because you are getting critical tasks done that will get you closer to your goals rather than just busy minor errands and such. I have been trying this out myself and find it so refreshing and less stressful than my old to-do list that never seemed to get me ahead.

Hope you try it out!

XOXO
